Beginning your BJJ Journey

Like many martial arts the students at BJJ Brisbane progress rank by rank using a belt system white to black. However, unlike many other martial arts, on average, it takes almost 10 years to get your BJJ black belt. In addition to belts, students receive stripes in between belt promotions, both of which are awarded by their Instructor. There is also a special belt system for children. These belt promotions are not solely based on the students' skills and technical knowledge. Character, depth of knowledge and consistency to training are also considered.

White belt

When you first start training at BJJ Brisbane you will be a white belt. This is the very first step on your BJJ journey. White belts start by learning the core fundamentals of BJJ. YOUR FIRST CLASS - Here are a few tips to make your first class go smoothly!

  • Wear something comfortable - a rash guard or close-fitting shirt and a pair of shorts is ideal.

  • Ladies should wear supportive sports bras and men may want to wear compression shorts.

  • Bring a bottle of water and refill often - you're going to sweat!

  • Don’t forget to shower! No one likes a stinky partner. Maintain good personal hygiene and keep your nails trimmed short.

  • No gi? Don’t stress. We have a range of Gi’s and can advise you on the best ones to buy when you are ready.

  • Leave your ego at the door - we facilitate a place of shared knowledge and enjoyment.

So how do I conquer the BJJ ranking system?

Like we said the journey to black belt is a long one but it is filled with fun, satisfaction and pride. Here are some tips to make your BJJ journey that bit smoother.

TIME ON THE MATS

  • Consistency is key. The more you train the more you’ll learn and the faster you'll progress

  • Don’t focus on the belt! Yes receiving a new rank is an amazing feeling but focus on your own improvements and the belts will come in time

  • Train smart - Although it is tempting to overtrain (take our word for it) the more you push yourself the more time you will take to recover and the more prone you will be to injuries

  • Remember BJJ is a "team" sport. Without your training buddies, you would have no one to practice with so be courteous and help those around you

  • Don’t neglect areas of your training. Although it is tempting to practice that choke you saw on UFC it is important to have a strong foundation of all BJJ techniques to progress

  • Have a positive mindset!
